DHAKA – Tensions reached a boiling point in the capital on Friday as hundreds of students and citizens converged on the Shahbagh intersection to protest the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent organizer of the July mass uprising and spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha.

Hadi, who was also a prospective parliamentary candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, succumbed to his injuries late Thursday night while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital.

A City in Mourning and Rage

As news of his passing broke at approximately 9:45 PM on December 18, spontaneous demonstrations erupted across Dhaka. By 8:30 AM Friday morning, the symbolic heart of the city—Shahbagh—was flooded with protesters. Carrying national flags and chanting defiant slogans such as “Break the black hands of fascism” and “Hadi’s blood shall not go in vain,” the crowd signaled a significant escalation in public unrest.

The atmosphere remains volatile. “We have lost a true patriot,” said Ashfakur Rahman, a student who traveled from Shanir Akhra to join the vigil. “I couldn’t sleep last night. We are here to ensure that his courage is never forgotten.”

The Assassination Attempt

The catalyst for the current unrest dates back to December 12, when Hadi was targeted in a brazen daylight assassination attempt in the city’s Bijoynagar area. While conducting public outreach from a moving rickshaw, he was struck in the head by gunfire.

After initial emergency care in Dhaka, he was airlifted to Singapore for specialized treatment. Despite a week-long battle for his life, medical officials confirmed his passing on Thursday.

Demands for Justice

Protesters have vowed to remain on the streets until those responsible for the shooting are held to account. “Hadi’s death has shaken the entire country,” stated Imrul Kayes, a protester from Rampura. “We will transform this grief into strength. We are not going home until justice is served.”

The authorities have yet to release a formal statement regarding the progress of the investigation into the shooting, but the heavy security presence in the capital suggests a government wary of a renewed wave of mass civil disobedience.
