Interim government Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has described BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia as an “inseparable part of a crucial chapter in Bangladesh’s history” as she continues to receive treatment in hospital.

He made the remarks in an address to the nation on Victory Day, Tuesday (16 December).

“Many of you are aware that national leader, three-time former prime minister, a leading figure in democratic politics, and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is currently hospitalised due to illness. This is a matter of concern for us all,” Professor Yunus said.

He added that Khaleda Zia “is an integral part of an important chapter in the history of Bangladesh.” Citing her unwavering commitment to the country’s independence, sovereignty and democracy, her contributions to national development, and the respect she commands among the people, he said the government had already declared her a Very Important Person (VIP) of the state.

“The government, respecting the wishes of her family, is providing all necessary support to ensure her treatment,” the chief adviser said. “Alongside treatment at home, all options, including advanced medical care abroad if required, are under consideration.”

Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka’s Bashundhara area on 23 November. After developing a lung infection on 27 November, she was transferred from a cabin to the hospital’s Critical Care Unit.

Now 79, the former prime minister has been suffering from multiple chronic and complex health conditions, including liver and kidney complications, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and infection-related problems.
